Our Story
Reinvention, Resilience, and the Next Chapter
Generation X spent decades with heads down, putting in the work, raising families, and following the playbook. We were told that retirement was a finish line — a quiet disengagement from the world.
We don't see it that way.
GenXRetired was born out of a shared realization: after traditional careers end, our generation still possesses immense energy, hard-earned wisdom, and a drive to create, connect, and give back. This platform is not just about leaving careers behind; it is about building a purposeful second act grounded in family, storytelling, creative expression, music, and community service.
“GenXRetired is not Marlene's company. It is not Mitch's company. It is a shared journey documented through different perspectives.”
Two Journeys, One Shared Direction
Marlene Mitchell
Managing Member · Creative Lead
For over 34 years, Marlene built a career in banking leadership, navigating complex financial landscapes, managing teams, and guiding clients toward fiscal stability. As a career woman, mother, and partner, she spent decades balancing demanding operational responsibilities with unwavering family devotion.
Today, Marlene serves as the Managing Member and operational engine of GenXRetired LLC. She directs the brand's day-to-day creative ventures, event production, and community initiatives. For Marlene, retirement isn't an exit — it is an intentional pivot toward creative freedom, music, and building platforms that bring people together.
Michael "Mitch" Mitchell
Chief Petty Officer (Ret.) · Strategic Voice
Mitch spent 36 combined years serving the nation — first through 22 years of active duty in the U.S. Navy submarine fleet, completing 16 strategic deterrent patrols, and later as Director of Security and Law Enforcement for one of the Navy's premier installations. His professional life was forged in accountability, high-stakes leadership, and service.
Now serving in community leadership as a local Veterans Association Commander, Mitch brings a grounded, strategic voice to GenXRetired. Through his commentary — including the Red vs Blue Mitch series — he cuts through the noise of modern polarization to champion independent thinking, common ground, and mental resilience.
What Taught Us What Matters Most
Our story began in 1987 while I was attending the Naval Guided Missile School in Dam Neck, Virginia. Two years later, we married, setting off on a shared journey that has spanned nearly four decades. Along the way, life brought deep personal trials that stripped away the superficial and clarified what truly endures.
When people ask about our family, the answer carries both profound love and enduring grief.
In 2006, our son, Eric, passed away at the age of 23 while in college. The loss of a child is a sorrow that never leaves; it reshapes your DNA. Eric taught us that tomorrow is never guaranteed, instilling a gratitude for every ordinary moment we share together.
In May 2019 — just 102 days before her planned wedding date — our daughter, Shay, was diagnosed with invasive ductal carcinoma. Watching her fight through aggressive treatments while severely immunocompromised as the world entered a global pandemic brought all outside chaos to an abrupt halt. Family had to come first.
Shay met that challenge with extraordinary grace and resilience, eventually reaching her five-year cancer-free milestone. Her journey prompted our move to Northern California in 2023 — a deliberate choice to step away from traditional careers and step closer to the people who matter most.
Recently, Shay received the news that her cancer has returned. While hearing those words again is heartbreaking, the landscape this time is profoundly different: we are no longer states away coordinating flights and managing phone calls from a distance. We are here, living just 30 minutes away. Being right down the road means we can show up on a moment's notice — whether that means driving to an appointment, sharing a meal, or simply standing by her and Nick's side so they never have to carry the weight alone.
Our family's journey has always been marked by love, loss, and resilience. We know the road ahead will demand strength, but we face it anchored together, showing up where it counts.
